The Chernobyl Group

In November 1999 a meeting was called to discuss the hosting of children from Belarus in the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in April 1986.

The resulting group named the Ballynacally, Kildysert, Lissycasey Chernobyl Children’s Group has developed into a strong successful organisation.

For the past number of summers, children from Belarus aged between eight and sixteen years have visited our community for three weeks.
The fresh air, food and care we offer them add two-to-three years onto their life-span and boosts their low immune system.

We organise visits to local Doctors and Dentists.

Annual fund raising campaigns are run to raise funds for flights, insurance, vitamins, clothes and food for the children and their families.

The local support for these ventures is overwhelming. Funds are raised through bag-packing, carol singing, motorbike pushing.
Through local schools, the pupils and teachers support is enormous. Almost every year the pupils run different ‘fun-days’ and the proceeds of these efforts are donated.

Also the parents council invite the Belarussian visitors to their end of school year fun-day.
The visiting children are welcomed into our community and participate fully in all local events.
